The Bell Tower Boutique Lodge

he Bell Tower is a purpose built boutique lodge situated amid stunning scenery overlooking Marlborough's vineyards. Completely private, guests can choose serenity and quiet or socialise with other travellers and their hosts, Kirsty Sutherland and Steve Planthaber.

The Belltower's beautiful courtyard. The main building features three adjoining living rooms: a relaxing “clubby” sitting room with open fire, a sunny day room and an elegant dining room. The Lodge also has a comfortable library/TV room with sky and video equipment. All rooms lead through French doors to a sheltered, walled courtyard – perfect for relaxing and enjoying the sun, or stroll beyond the courtyard for an expansive view of the Wairau Plains.

Included in the complex is the French Barn. Built from recycled materials and furnished with rustic antiques, this is a spacious, light and romantic building with two bedrooms, large bathroom, with shower and claw-foot bath, comfortable living and dining areas , kitchen and barbecue. Comprises two bedrooms, one with a super-king/twin, the second with a queen bed. French doors lead outside from the dining and living areas. Particularly popular with honeymooners and families, all the lodge facilities are available to guests occupying the barn.

Blenheim township and Marlborough airport are a few minutes away and the Picton Ferry is 25 minutes by car or bus. Complimentary transfers are available by prior arrangement. Hire cars are available from both the airport and ferry terminal.

Queen Charlotte Sound: Entry point for many visitors, the Queen Charlotte Sound offers a wealth of waterbourne pastimes. Take a cruise to one of the many resorts dotted around secluded bays – go fishing, diving, take a cruise for bird, seal and dolphin watching, walk the famed Queen Charlotte Track (or part of it) – lunch at the popular Punga Lodge or Bay of Many Coves Resort or take a trip on the mailboat, which delivers mail and every other essential to the waterlocked properties and resorts in the Sound.

Havelock, an attractive fishing village and entrance to Pelorus Sound is a 20 minute drive away – Watersports, walking, fishing and recreational boating are available. The harbour is esturine and home to a variety of wild birdlife. Kaikoura, a 90 minute drive, offers sea fishing (an adventure pursuit, quite different from the sheltered waters of the Sounds) swimming with dolphins, whale watching and helicopter flights. Nelson, (also 90 minutes away )on the West Coast is a haven for writers, painters, artists and sculptors.
